Sobriety is bound to get boring at some point. Binge-watching Netflix or oversleeping can get old - FAST. Especially with most of the world still stuck in lockdown.

Let's look at four ways to deal with boredom that can help you stay on track.

Dealing With Boredom in Sobriety Tip #1:

Pick up a new hobby -  This tip will take some trial and error because finding a new hobby that sticks can be a challenge. Sometimes finances will limit your options, but when there's a will, there's another way. Make a list of things within your budget that you're interested in trying. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Arts & crafts (drawing, painting, colouring books...maybe even pointillism?)
  • Start a podcast
  • Teach yourself to knit/crochet
  • Try out creative writing
  • Do some gardening
  • Learn different methods of cooking/baking! Sushi is a seriously cool skill to master
  • Make some music
  • Learn how to code
  • Scale some mounts and go hiking
  • See if you're into scrapbooking

Dealing With Boredom in Sobriety Tip #2:

Learn something new -  Between having access to the world wide web and public libraries, the possibilities to expand your education are endless. We've got a list of topics that might inspire you to start learning:

  • Learn a new language
  • How to trade stocks or bitcoin
  • Dive into the strategy of becoming a chess champion
  • Anything related to science 
  • Read about philosophy
  • Educate yourself on the history of racism

Dealing With Boredom in Sobriety Tip #3:

Get moving - Start every morning with yoga. Go for a walk! Pump yourself up with some weight lifting. Commit to 50 jumping jacks or pushups right before you shower. Have a daily dance party to your favourite playlists. You don't need a gym or a treadmill to get moving. Just MOVE! And have fun while you do it.

Dealing With Boredom in Sobriety Tip #4:

Say YES to self-care - You've been at war with yourself for a while. It's time to dive deep and meet all your needs. Self-care looks different for everyone but can include meditation, washing your dishes, or taking a hot bath filled with your favourite Epsom salts. Continue the healing process, so you can begin to forgive your past self. Here are a few more things you can do to show yourself some extra TLC:

  • Drink a full glass of water
  • Watch your favourite childhood movie
  • Open a window and spend 5 minutes deep breathing
  • Stretch!
  • Exfoliate and moisturize your skin from head to toe
  • Light a candle or some incense
  • Go to bed an hour early
  • De-clutter your immediate vicinity for 10 minutes
  • Write a letter to your younger self 

It's still okay to stream sometimes or get some extra sleep. Just be mindful of falling into a boredom rut that makes you want to binge on old bad habits.
