Most of us feel down on occasion — it’s a normal part of life when we are faced with problems and feel overwhelmed. When it becomes more of an infrequent situation and you begin to feel hopeless and full of despair, what you are feeling may have become depression. If the amount of time you are experiencing these emotions lengthens and it begins to impact your ability to function on a daily basis, it’s time to consider getting some help.

Depression can mean that you are struggling or unable to work, study, eat healthy meals, interact with others, sleep and more. Some even describe it as ‘living in a black hole’ or ‘feeling like I’m encased in cement’. Getting through the day in front of you may feel like a monumental task even when faced with ordinary, routine tasks.

Reaching out and asking for help is a big step in recovery from this debilitating issue. Although it may seem difficult to understand this, the feelings you have are just feelings — they are not reality. It’s critical to get at the cause of your depression and to understand why you are experiencing it, and then take steps to overcome it.

Signs you may be depressed

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person — below are some typical signs and symptoms. Please remember we all feel these emotions at times as a normal part of life. It’s the length of time you are experiencing them and the impact on your life that may mean you are depressed:

  • Feeling hopeless and helpless
  • Loss of interest in daily activities
  • Appetite or weight changes. 
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Anger or irritability
  • Loss of energy
  • Self-loathing
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Reckless behaviour


Depression is a serious mental health issue and severe depression is a risk for suicide. If you are experiencing some or all of these symptoms, it’s time to speak to your physician and to seek help.
