Recognizing your addictive behaviours is one thing, moving forward in an attempt to overcome them is another. For some, it is a possibility that they will never recognize these behaviours. That does not mean that you are not desiring a healthier, satisfying lifestyle where addiction is out of the equation; It might just require more dedication to solving the issue.
Addiction is a physical and psychological issue that takes control of your life. Therefore, it is im-portant to recognize that unlearning those processes is no easy feat, but it is very much possible. Knowing you’re ready to change is where it all begins.
Recognizing there is a problem
The biggest hurdle when beginning the journey to overcome your addiction is recognizing you have a problem. It is likely the most efficient way, but not everybody can recognize their issues. Realizing that you need to seek out solutions, in order to get rid of your destructive habits caused by addiction, means you have a sense of clarity. This sense of clarity will allow you to move for-ward in obtaining your sobriety and changing your ways.
Check-in with yourself
Many people will not experience a moment of awakening where everything begins to click into place. So, for some, key factors within your life can indicate to you that it may be time to over-come your addiction.
Your overall health is very telling when it comes to addictive behaviours. Has the addiction caused an emotional, physical, or mental change within you? How has this change impacted your everyday life? The side effects of addiction can wear your body down and there is a laun-dry list of health issues that can arise from continued use of alcohol and drugs. These include changes in blood pressure, anxiety, psychosis, strokes, and in some instances death. Some of these issues can be long-lasting, so it’s important to stop them before they become permanent. Are irreversible changes to your health worth it?
Check-in with your wallet
There is one thing that is pretty clear: addictions are not cheap. The trouble with continuous pur-chasing of drugs or alcohol is the dent it will put in your bank account. It’s important to lay out the necessities in your life and consider if your addictive substances fit into that category. Money is something you work hard for, so why let it be wasted on something that is only harming you? If you begin to see debt creeping up, and money dwindling, maybe it's time to get treatment for your addiction in order to eliminate the unnecessary extra costs.
Explore your neighbourhood
If hiking is not for you, there are likely countless paths in your neighbourhood that would work just fine. Finding a walking route in your neighbourhood that you can commit yourself to a couple times a week is a great, easy way to get yourself out of the house with minimal effort.
Weigh the pros and cons
Consider the pros and cons of overcoming your addiction. Write down what is most important to you in life, what the cost of continuing will be, how your addiction affects the people you love, etc. Putting this down on paper will lay out a map of your life. When you done, it will likely be that the pros of quitting outweigh the negatives. If this is the case, you are likely aware that there is a great benefit to stopping your problematic behaviour. But, make sure you are not just doing it for others. You have to make sure your happiness is on the ‘pros’ side of the list. Wanting to do this for yourself is the most important part and the only way for you to truly succeed.
