You have finally decided to take the chance and live a sober life. Recovery is a complicated process. Many significant things will have to change, like your lifestyle and new coping skills. One of the hardest parts of sobriety is the first couple of months. To help you avoid making mistakes, here is a list of a few mistakes people make during recovery.
Going through it alone.
When you first become sober, you may realize that your friends spend their time at the pub or a house party, making it difficult for you to stay on your sobriety road, let your current friends know that you prefer to hang out and spend time doing alcohol-free activities. You can make some new friends, find someone going through the same experience as you, such as joining a sober club or attending sober events. The most important thing is to have support and someone you can rely on.
Comparing your progress to others.
Everyone wants to know how their recovery is going. The worst thing that you do is comparing your progress to other's progress. Comparisons are counterproductive and never accurate. Everyone who is recovering faces completely different challenges, and the road to recovery should be cooperative. We all benefit from support, but when you start making comparisons, it turns into a competition. Judge your progress on your own goals.
Getting into a relationship.
Now that you are sober, you may find things to fill gaps in your life, like dating. The beginning of a relationship can be time-consuming, stressful and confusing. If you meet someone you like, you will most likely prioritize this person over other things like recovery. Taking on a new relationship early in sobriety is a mistake. Relationships bring on strong emotions, some good and some bad; this can be hard to deal with if your recovery is not stable. The start of your recovery is a chance for you to get to know yourself and making changes for a better life. Getting into a relationship can distract you from establishing a solid, sober life. Be comfortable with yourself first, before you get comfortable with someone else.
Forgetting to reward yourself.
In the early stages of your sobriety, it is important to treat yourself with respect and kindness. Reward yourself for accomplishing your goals, admitting you had a problem and going for treatment. Treat yourself to something you enjoy. It could be some chocolate, a soda or even your favourite dessert; don't go overboard. With all the money you will be saving up from not spending on your addictions, you can purchase something you've always wanted.
Sobriety is difficult, and everyone makes mistakes. The good news is mistakes aren't the end of the world. Even if you relapse, you can learn from these mistakes and try again.
